At Cantrell Primary and Nursery School we prioritise the teaching of Early Reading, which includes high quality phonics teaching combined with a culture that promotes ‘Reading for Pleasure’. We believe that all our children can become fluent readers and writers, and we aim to equip them with the skills to read for meaning and regularly enjoy reading for pleasure. Through the teaching of a systematic synthetic phonics programme, our children will build on their knowledge of the alphabetic code and will master phonics, enabling them to read and spell as they progress through school. At Cantrell we follow the ‘Letters and Sounds’ programme for teaching Systematic Synthetic Phonics. We follow the programme with fidelity and all resources are in line with ‘Letters and Sounds’.
